On The Rise – FLO

FLO is a trailblazing British girl group from London, making significant waves in the music industry since their formation in 2019. Comprising Jorja Douglas, Stella Quaresma, and Renée Downer, FLO has quickly risen to prominence, drawing comparisons to iconic R&B and hip-hop acts of the 1990s and early 2000s. Their music notably blends classic R&B with hip-hop influences, a style prominently showcased in their debut single “Cardboard Box,” which has drawn comparisons to the work of TLC and Sugababes. FLO’s influences are broad and include artists like Aaliyah, Amy Winehouse, Destiny’s Child, and more contemporary figures like H.E.R..

The group released their surprise extended play “3 of Us” on July 3, 2023, featuring tracks like “Control Freak” and “Change,” which they had previously performed on their “FLO Live” tour. This release was described as a gift to their fans, affectionately known as “FLO Lifers,” who eagerly awaited new music. Their song “Losing You” earned a nomination for Push Performance of the Year at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, and the group received three nominations at the 36th Soul Train Awards. They are also slated to perform at significant music festivals like Coachella and The Governors Ball in 2024.

Before achieving fame, the members of FLO had diverse backgrounds and interests. Renée Downer is from North London and grew up listening to R&B, church gospel, and house music. Stella Quaresma has roots in Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey, and spent time in Mozambique before returning to England for school. Jorja Douglas, originally from Germany, moved to Hertfordshire at the age of eight and gained attention in 2017 as the winner of the CBBC show ‘Got What It Takes?’.

FLO’s debut single, “Cardboard Box,” is an exploration of relationship struggles and the process of moving on from an ex, marking a significant bonding moment for the group. Their debut EP, “The Lead,” features tracks like “Immature,” “Summertime,” and “Feature Me,” showcasing their ability to blend modern R&B sounds with nostalgic influences. The involvement of producer MNEK, known for working with acts like Little Mix and Beyoncé, underscores the high quality of their music production.

Garnering accolades early in their career, FLO was awarded the Brits Rising Star of 2023, marking them as the first group to win this prestigious award and signposting them as a significant emerging act in British music. Their swift rise to fame and the enthusiastic reception of their music have solidified their status as one of the most exciting new acts in contemporary R&B.
